Take me out to the ball game!

Anyone who knows us knows one thing for sure. Jay loves baseball. And unfortunately his favorite team is the Mets. So we were fortunate enough to get two tickets to the Phillies/Mets game on Saturday. Since it was an afternoon game and children under 3 can get it for free, we decided to take both kids with us. Jacob went to a game last year and did well so we were cautiously optimistic for this game. Actually, Jay and I had little expectations for the game at all!

Jacob, Jaelyn and I were all decked out in our Phillies gear. Since he lives in Phillies territory, Jay owns plenty of Phillies shirts and sweat shirts but not one single Mets item. And to be perfectly honest, I’m not sure that it would have been smart to wear a Mets shirt with a bunch of Philly fans. They can be brutal --- even with small children around.

We talked about the baseball game all morning long. Jacob was pretty excited for it and kept talking about the bat and the ball. One of our first stops when we got to the game was the gift shop. Naturally Jacob spotted a giant ball and insisted on getting it but we chose a hat for both him and Jaelyn. All went well during the first inning. Jacob clapped when everyone else clapped. He even cheered "GO!" with the other fans. The people in front of us thought he was the cutest thing and couldn’t believe how into it he was. And frankly, neither could we! Jaelyn couldn’t have cared less. She was content with jumping on my legs and smiling at the people in the row behind us.

The smell of great foods at the baseball game were surrounding us so Jacob and Jay headed to the concession stands a short while later. Two drinks, 3 hot dogs, a soft pretzel and $25 later we were all enjoying the 2nd inning. But now Jacob realized that there was food and other things at the game other than just bats and balls. And he wanted to explore those things. After a mini-meltdown, we quickly realized that it was in our best interests to let the boy explore.

In our explorations, we came across some balloons. Another one of Jacob’s favorite things. But you try telling a 22 month old that those balloons aren’t his. It didn’t go over to well. And no matter what we did, Jacob kept running back over or pointing to the balloons. So we only had one option left: the kid zone. The kid zone was a fun place. Two things surprised me about it. For one, there were no televisions in the play area although they did broadcast the game over the radio. And two, it was very close to a smoking section so the whole time we were there we were breathing in 2nd hand smoke. This was ultimately the reason we left coupled with the fact that Jacob drank too much and leaked through his diaper! So by the 5th inning, we were headed to our car. The game went to 10 innings and the Phillies ended up winning. I’m sure it was a great game but we would have never made it through the entire game.
